| Off in the beaten path
Rolling green hills carpeted in thick leafy foliage
surround us as we gaze high into the heavens,
sipping a cup of mid-afternoon tea. “You should be
drinking coffee,” our hostess and Lodge Manager
Monika Eisenhut teasingly advises us, herself
taking a glass of cold water. The blazing sun
feels relaxing after a long drive, softly warming
our shoulders while a flowing breeze works to
keep us cool. Looking around I catch my breath,
my expectations have been well met and within
moments of stepping foot in the country lodge, we
have decided to stay longer than we had intended.
The name of this enchanting Tanzanian get-away is
Utengule Coffee Lodge and it is certainly worth a trip
to Mbeya in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania
By BRENNEN MATTHEWS |
Set in the lush 3000 meter
Mbeya Peak of the Great
Rift Valley, the area has a
great many attractions that
are simply beckoning. There are the
obvious activities that are provided by
the lodge such as a fair size swimming
pool, a tennis court and even a squash
court.
The gardens are home to a wide variety
of beautiful bird life and fauna and
for many, laying back on one of the
provided sun-beds with a good book
and a cool drink is all that is needed
for a day to be complete. However,
visitors are gamely welcome to walk
to the coffee farm which is a pleasant
30 minute gentle hike through lovely
forest or if you would prefer, the lodge
can arrange a transfer; by car it is only 5
minutes over a dusty windy road. On the
farm you will be able to witness with your
own eyes, as we did, coffee production
at work. The lodge can arrange a half
or full day guided excursion that takes
visitors through each step in the long and
amazing process of coffee processing
and production. It is inspiring to watch
the hundreds of workers, mostly local
women from neighboring villages as they
sing and chat while carefully picking the
ripe beans from the seemingly endless
leafy trees. For those in excellent physical
shape the lodge can arrange for full days
trek to the summit of Mbeya Peak . It
may not be Kilimanjaro but it is truly a
beautiful adventure.
In the general vicinity of the lodge guests
can visit Ngozi Crater Lakes that are
fabled to contain monsters, much as our
cousin’s lake in Scotland (Loch Ness).
There is World’s End View Point, a natural
arch bridge locally known as the Bridge
of God, the ancient Songwe caves that are
dark and spooky and home to hundreds of
bats, natural hot springs where dinosaur
eggs were found as late as the 1950s and
the Mbozi meteorite, the 8th largest in the
world. In addition there are some amazing
waterfalls within travelling distance
from Mbeya town that are a favorite of
local expatriates and rumored by locals
to possess mystical powers. Each of the
above will vary in travel time and distance...
